WellTrust provides an initial assessment to identify the amount, frequency and effects of alcohol and drug use. The assessment includes the use of various screening tools and DSM IV.
When drug use is identified, our counsellors provide an ongoing one-on-one counselling and support regime for the student. This is on an outpatient basis, and is completed at their school or at the WellTrust offices; whichever suits better.
WellTrust counsellors work to encourage youth/rangatahi to make better decisions by supporting and educating them around the negative impacts and possible effects of their alcohol and drug use.
Our AOD counsellor will negotiate a ‘memorandum of understanding' with each school guidance counsellor, so both know how we work in their school.
When funding can be arranged, we provide an early intervention/preventative education programme for groups of up to 6 students. Otherwise we recommend the DARE programmes, such as ‘DARE to move on'. The preventative education programmes we provide have a focus on puberty and the effects of drugs on the developing adolescent brain.
WellTrust offers support for parents, and schools are also offered the opportunity to use WellTrust services for parent drug awareness evenings.
We are also available to provide staff professional development/awareness education and to advise about AOD education in the classroom.
Drug testing can be a valuable component of our intervention service and many youth find it helpful. It is used, with permission from the client, to help the young person understand the chemical effects of drug use, and to see how long it remains in the body. Some find it helpful to say to their mates "I can't, I have a drug test next week."
We are the referral agent for clients where there is a significant level of substance abuse or dependence, and a residential treatment programme is deemed appropriate.
